Newly diagnosed

The first months after an MS diagnosis can feel crowded and confusing. This page is a short, practical starting point — and a direct route into the parts of the directory that are most useful early on.

Five things that help early on

  1. 1.Give yourself time

A diagnosis rarely needs an immediate decision. Most people find the first weeks are for absorbing the news, not for planning everything.

  2. 2.Write your questions down

Appointments go quickly. A written list — about your type of MS, treatment options, monitoring and what to do in a relapse — makes them count.

  3. 3.Find your named contact

Many MS services have a nurse or coordinator who is your route back in between appointments. Ask who that is and how to reach them.

  4. 4.Bring someone with you

A care partner, family member or friend hears different things than you do, and can take notes while you ask.

  5. 5.Look for orientation support

First-year programmes, information lines and peer groups exist in many countries and online, often at no cost.

Where to go next

This page is general orientation, not medical advice. Decisions about treatment belong with you and your own clinical team.
